Sanctuary to Launch Public ‘Moral Reasoning’ Program
Sanctuary Community of Christ is excited to announce a new “Moral Reasoning” program for the public, taking the place of the regular Bible study with John-Charles Duffy, which will now meet at 4:15 p.m., right before the Moral Reasoning session. This new schedule ensures a smooth transition from scripture exploration into deeper ethical discussion.
What is Moral Reasoning?
Moral reasoning is the process of examining situations, decisions, and dilemmas to determine what is right or wrong, just or unjust. Unlike simple rules or instructions, it asks participants to think critically, weigh consequences, and consider ethical principles—even when there’s no clear-cut answer. Moral reasoning is challenging because real-life situations are rarely black-and-white.
At Sanctuary, we’ll approach moral reasoning through the lens of Jesus Christ, considering compassion, justice, and integrity in every discussion. Participants will reflect on how Christ’s teachings guide responses to complex moral dilemmas, helping develop both understanding and character.
A Hard Moral Reasoning Example
Imagine you are the manager of a company and discover that one of your employees is stealing small amounts of money. If you report them, they could lose their job and struggle to support their family. If you don’t report them, the theft could continue and harm others. What is the right course of action? How do you balance justice, mercy, and responsibility?
This program is designed to tackle questions like these, encouraging thoughtful dialogue and reflection on everyday moral challenges. Through guided discussion and examination of scripture, participants will sharpen their ability to navigate difficult ethical situations with wisdom and compassion.
