Palm Sunday Service: A Solemn Reminder of Jesus' Commitment to Nonviolence
This past Sunday, March 29th, was Palm Sunday, the day we celebrate Jesus' humble arrival into Jerusalem. Sunday's service, delivered by pastor Connie Altman, reminded us of just who Jesus really was. The scripture for Sunday's service focused on the story from Matthew in which Jesus arrived humbly in the city riding a donkey. He was hailed a king, and many, as she explained, believed he had come to overthrow the Roman Empire and release the people.
When these things did not occur, the people turned on him, ready to put him to death. Altman reminded us that Jesus knew what was to come even though the day was celebratory, with others unaware of the fate soon to befall him. He did not arrive with an army or kill the leaders of the Roman Empire as many expected. Instead, he showed he was the Messiah through peace and humility rather than military might.
Jesus faced his foes with courage and resolve and promoted peace. Pastor Altman asked the congregation to reflect on what must have been going through Jesus' mind in that moment. She also reminded the group of Community of Christ's mission to help create God's peaceable Kingdom on Earth and of the courage and resolve that it requires.
